If someone had told me 10 days ago that I would make it 10 days without carbs, sugar, dairy, or alcohol (not the hardest one) I would've laughed. I'm a girl who loves her cereal. Its so EASY! Bowl, cereal, milk, time to eat! I really don't enjoy cooking and I want to eat when I'm hungry- not plan an hour ahead that I might be hungry then or be hungry and then have to cook for 30 minutes after the fact. I at least give myself props that instead of going out and spending money I just have a bowl of cereal, but I guess I'm really not feeding my body the way I should. STILL. I'm bored. I'm bored with out bread to sop up my egg yolks. I want to have a cookie or two. Not the whole bag or as many as I can fit into my mouth- just a couple.
Breakfast: 2 Eggs and Bacon
Snack: Hard boiled Egg and Banana
Lunch: NY Strip Steak and vegetables from Center Club
Snack: Apple and Almonds
Dinner: 2 Eggs and 3 spoonfuls of applesauce
A Story about lunch out: A partner at my work offered to take me to lunch and I had to explain that I couldn't have a bunch of stuff, but he assured me that Center Club in Costa Mesa right near our work would have something. We sit down and there are Parmesan bread crisps on the table with butter. As I peruse the menu I notice that most things have potatoes- well can't have those so I'll just ask for double vegetables. I figure steak is the safest as I can ask for it without any sauce. This waiter is looking at me with daggers in his eyes as I'm modifying everything on the plate. I ask for medium well strip steak (I find places under cook my steak- they didn't = /), no potatoes, and double asparagus. I also asked whether the vegetables were sauteed in butter and they were so I asked them to saute in something else. What I got was a menagerie of vegetables- brussel sprouts, green beans, bok choy, beets, and asparagus and a hunk of meat. I definitely missed the potatoes to dip my steak in- for me they balance out a meal like that. I didn't have any problems after so either they lied and my body liked it or they did do the vegetables in something else.
Overall my resolve is waivering. Is it day 31 yet so I can add stuff back in? I weighed myself- yeah I know I'm not supposed to, but I was hoping it would make me feel like the sacrifices were worth it. I've lost 3 lbs. I dunno I'm not impressed. I understand that it's supposed to be a sacrifice and change our eating forever, but I think I'm more under the camp I only have one life and I'd like to eat what I want within reason. = )

Canyon Crossfit- Day 9 (1/25/12)-Meh
Random cravings today: a vegetarian burrito from Bobby D's and my friends Molasses cookies (at least that's what I call them). I don't really like Molasses so it's odd that I'm craving that.
For breakfast I had two eggs and a stuffed tomato from last night. I snacked on a banana. Had another stuffed tomato for lunch. Snacked on almonds and cantaloupe. For dinner we had spaghetti squash with spinach pesto, green beans, and chicken. I don't really like the smell of pumpkin so when I would mix up the squash sometimes it would put off that smell and kinda put me off. Overall it was pretty good.
Even though we've had a variety of food, I'm kinda bored already. All the food I've had has been really good, but meh. I dunno. I'm missing half my usual diet.

Canyon Crossfit- Day 8 (1/24/12)- Huzzah!
After my cereal last night I was determined to try and make it through as much of today without "cheating."
I had 2 eggs, 1/2 an avocado, and tomato for breakfast. It was very colorful on my plate and was tasty to boot! I had a long tax department meeting today so I didn't end up having a snack, but I didn't really miss it so I didn't feel bad. I then had a lunch meeting where they usually have sandwiches and chips. I really like chips. Instead of not eating I planned ahead and brought my lunch- pork, asparagus, sweet potato wedges, zucchini, and squash. Had an apple for a snack later on.
I noticed that I drank less water this morning than I usually do and didn't have a huge headache like I had yesterday. I packed an emergency piece of bread and gatorade in case I needed a pick me up to focus, but was happy when I didn't need them.
Went to workout today and made it through fine. I didn't notice whether I felt any better during it more than usual. Did 75 lbs on a squat clean (i think) and on the running/air squats part I got 8:35. I hate running, but I'm good at squats!
Came home to Sausage stuffed tomatoes and asparagus. So yummy. I think I'm going to have that with an egg tomorrow for breakfast- has great flavor. So glad the headaches didn't return today.

Canyon Crossfit Nutrition- Day 7 (1/23/12)- The one where I have to reorganize my priorities...
Today for breakfast I had 2 eggs scrambled, applesauce, and some cantaloupe. After talking to Andrew (a trainer at CC) he said that his headaches had gone away after eating some more fruit. At this point I'm willing to try anything!
I snack on a banana at 10:30...seems like my food is holding me over a bit longer.
I was supposed to have lunch with a partner at my firm today, but he asked to move it to Thursday. I didn't bring lunch from home since we were going out (I already had where I wanted us to go and knew what I was going to eat from there). Now the dilemma of what to eat. After looking at the menus of the restaurants around me I decided on claim jumper. I ordered a chopped cobb salad with chicken, egg, tomato, avocado, and bacon. No dressing. I mashed up the avocado and used that to "cream up" my bites. I forgot that all their salads come with bread- I proceeded to give that to a coworker who I knew would enjoy it. I've noticed that during lunch and dinner I feel nauseous part of the way through my meal and cause I know I'm still hungry I force myself to eat a couple bites more or finish my plate.
My headaches are dull all day but then get worse in the afternoons. I usually can go off caffeine in two to three days (when I go the British Virgin Islands it's so expensive I just give it up for 2 weeks), but I thought maybe in combination with the other food differences maybe it was different. I tried having tea- nothing. Tried taking pain pills extra strength- no luck (they also contain caffeine). At this point I'm getting irritated cause I can't focus at work or on my studying (my CPA exam is next Wednesday). I feel drunk or hungover most of the day.
I snack on carrots and grapes.
I posted a comment in our facebook group and people have lots of suggestions for me. Most of them I have tried- eat more fruit, drink more water, wait it out. After talking to my parents about how I was feeling they challenged me to really put what's more important to the top of my priority list. At this point passing my exam is the most important thing and so that means I can't have a headache while I'm trying to focus. Since I'm not sure what my body is craving I'm going to add random things in (almost like the days after 30 in the plan) to see what makes me feel better.
I eat a small bowl of multi grain honey nut cheerios and lactose free milk. Then I have pancakes and an egg. I'm missing some vegetables but half the time when I eat them at dinner I want to vomit so I'm giving myself a break. My headache starts to fade and I'm able to focus on my studying! YAY! My stomach feels a little unhappy- not surprising since I'm screwing with it. I think tomorrow I'll take a gatorade to work and test that out at snack time. Otherwise I guess it will be carbs.
I have received so much support from the other "participants" (that sounds so sterile) it's really inspiring. I plan on eating as strict as possible while figuring out how to get rid of my headaches to focus. I'm so lucky to have a group of such great people around me during this process to cheer me on. Thanks so much everyone! I'm hoping to get back on the wagon after February 1st.

Canyon Crossfit Nutrition- Day 6 (1/22/12)- Leftover MANIA!
For breakfast I had 2 pieces of bacon with eggs and spinach. I snacked on a banana with some almond butter and a few bites of applesauce. Went to work out today so I ate lunch a bit later. I had some of the sweet potato hash/sausage from yesterday with blackberries and raspberries. For dinner I had leftover pork from last night with broccoli and cauliflower. After dinner I wanted to try a new recipe I found for paleo pancakes. I've been looking for something that tastes like a muffin cause even though I don't eat them very often it's what I've been craving. I think I just need another breakfast option other than eggs! So here is the recipe http://www.paleoplan.com/2011/ 06-01/banana-almond-pancakes/. They recipe makes 6 3-4 inch pancakes. I could probably eat them all by myself but my parents and I shared them since it was just a trial. I highly recommend you try them especially if you have some little ones on the plan as well.
I was looking around the site some more and found a few others that I think I'm going to try out (and by me I mean I will suggest them to my Dad...but here they are in case you're sick of trying to come up with something.

I'm still getting headaches and sometimes its hard to "choke down" so much protein and vegetables. I start feeling sick towards the end of my meals sometimes almost like I'm full, but then I still feel hungry when I'm done? So weird. I still feel like I'm running out of steam towards the end of my work outs and the mere mention of in n out and I'm thinking about fries for an hour...
We have so many leftovers in our house so we'll be eating through those before we probably whip up anything else. Leftovers make it so much easier for me to bring lunch to work with no work in the morning (which is right up my alley).

Canyon Crossfit Nutrition- Day 5 (1/21/12)- Cranky Pants!
I'm cranky. I want fries and a beer I'll be honest. The headaches are going down thankfully, but my stomach is still funky and half the time I feel hungry- or at least I think I am (Yes, Andrew I'm drinking my water!).
Today I had a banana with some almond butter and a couple scoops of natural apple sauce before heading off to do my WOD of the day.
45 seconds on- 15 transition- 3 rounds
Walls balls, push press, box jumps, sumo high pull, row, rest....REPEAT!
I got home to breakfast already cooked for me! Seriously my parents being on this is the only way I'm surviving. It was a ground pork/sweet potato hash with onions and bell peppers. Super yummy. Had the same thing for lunch with a single fried egg (in coconut oil of course) and some raspberries with blackberries. Snacked on a couple almonds to keep me "full" until dinner. My dad made pork with a balsamic vinegar glaze (with a TEENY bit of sugar I'll admit it), baked sweet potato wedges, and garlic asparagus.
I'm struggling today. The food my dad makes is super yummy, but at the same time I really just want to not feel so restricted in my eating. I know this is only day 5, but I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to last for 30 days. Hopefully everyone else is doing better than me! Also- I want a blueberry muffin with butter.

Canyon Crossfit Nutrition- Day 4 (1/20/12)
Today I started out with 2 eggs and meat leftover from dinner last (ground turkey with onions and green bell peppers). I wanted to test whether I would be starving if I only had 2 eggs instead of 3- think it felt just about the same. I snacked on apples and some almonds. For lunch I had more meat with cauliflower from last night and some carrots. Then another snack of apples and almonds. For dinner I had 2 eggs again and meat leftover. Pretty boring day for food.
Went to work out at 6 pm. Our WOD was as follows:
8 rounds of:
1 minute pull ups
1 minute push ups
1 minute rest
After dinner I went to a Kareoke bar for a friends party. The no alcohol part of this 30 days is really hard when there are celebrations going on. I have a couple glasses of water and when everyone else has popcorn (one of my favorites) I have raw almonds that I had in my purse.
I want In-N-Out fries and a Beer...
I guess for me the real take away from this whole process will be to make better choices and really look at my idea of "moderation."

Canyon Crossfit Nutrition- Day 3 (1/19/12)- I didn't cheat!
Today started out a little better than the past two. I had 3 eggs for breakfast with onion powder and a 1/4 of an avocado (the other half was bad). I have always had a glass (16 oz) of water with breakfast. Since I have to get to half my body weight in ounces I have found the easiest way to do that is to take a water bottle in the car and finish the 24 oz before I get to work. At work I have two water bottles sitting on my desk so I have water constantly at my fingertips. I had problems with not eating enough yesterday so I had an apple and then a hard boiled egg to snack on.
I had a meeting during lunch time with the PCRF Run/Walk Committee which I'm on (May 6th, 2012- you should really sign up! Maybe a Canyon Crossfit Team?!). Our sponsors provide lunch for us each time and usually they're sandwiches. I packed chicken and vegetables leftover from last night to bring with me. Yes I was the only one walking in with my own lunch. Felt lame for sure. The cookie platter was staring at me- I resisted. They looked so yummy.
After an extremely long meeting right after that one- I didn't get back to my desk until 4:30. I immediately grabbed another apple as my stomach was growling. I haven't felt AS sick today as I did yesterday, but I don't feel great that's for sure. It's a study night so I go home and not to work out. I get home and my Dad is testing out ground turkey, onion, bell pepper, and some jalapeno. It turns out delicious! We steam some broccoli and cauliflower and make a meal of it. I think we're going to try it with eggs for breakfast.
I'm hoping tomorrow is better for my stomach and headaches! Hope you all are surviving!

Canyon Crossfit Nutrition Day 2- I'm not prepared! (1/18/12)
I realize that I'm not prepared for Day 2. I haven't been to the store to shop since I was at Cats last night. I don't have anymore bacon fat so I use butter to cook my eggs in. Not even 7:30 am and I'm cheating already! I'm starting to feel guilty and then I realize that it's my nutrition challenge experience and that I'm just going to do my best. That's all I can ask of myself with so many other demands being placed on me (more placing them on myself than anything). I work at Deloitte as a Senior. I review tax returns and as most of you know tax season is upon us! I'm also studying for my CPA exam (the two I have left I have gotten 74s on before but needed a 75). The CPA exam has 4 parts and you have to pass them all in a rolling 18 months. If I don't pass the next two I have scheduled I lose one of them (luckily the tax section) in May. However, I'd rather just pass the next two and get it over with. It's been a long journey so far and I'm starting to get burnt out. So between tax season, studying, and trying to keep up my workouts so I don't lose my sanity and get fat- I'm spread a little thin. Oh did I also mention that I have four weddings to attend this year. One of my best friends is getting married in May and I'm planning her bachelorette party in Vegas- the weekend after tax season ends. I'm also in a wedding in June. Then I have one in August and then September. I'm notorious for fretting about things outside of my control so all these things combined I'm pretty hard on myself.
The tri tip from the other night doesn't look appetizing when I pack my lunch in the morning so I just pack a salad with some cherry tomatoes and then balsamic with oil for dressing. I pack my apples and almonds again and hope I can last the day. I get halfway through my salad and I want to puke. Not clue why just not feeling it. I stop and start inhaling my almonds to try and fill the void. My stomach starts trying to eat me from the inside out and my resolve is starting to waiver! Right as I'm about to say screw it and get some Cheetos from the vending machine I find a piece of gum. Yes I know. Not supposed to have gum, however I decide that is the better option of the two. It's get me through to my next snack which I've held off a little longer so I can hopefully make it to the end of the workday. My head is now POUNDING and my stomach is seriously unhappy with me.
I get home and luckily my Dad has gone shopping (yes I live at home, yes I'm 26, yes I plan to move out once I pass the CPA exam and don't have $200 tests eluding me, until then I'm perfectly fine where I am growing my nest egg) for some meat and vegetables. I have convinced my parents, somehow, to do this with me so that will keep me focused and help out when I have late nights at the office. I shove more almonds and a banana into me before I head off to do my Performance WOD. I'm cranky when I get there, hungry, and have a huge headache.
The Performance WOD is as follows:
400m Run
Cindy (5 Pull ups- I did a thin black band, 10 hands up push ups- did on my knees, 15 air squats)
21 Deadlifts #65
400m Run
Cindy
15 Front Squats #65
400m Run
Cindy
9 Clean and Jerk #65
I finish in 16:39. Right in line with everyone else but now my head is REALLY pounding and I'm starting to get dizzy! I go sit outside and try to recover. During my runs I was trying to figure out how long it would take someone to find me if I fell over- I felt like I had no energy and that everything was a struggle. Where things felt so easy just a couple days ago now I feel like there is no way I'll finish. I ask someone who's already been doing the "diet" for a couple weeks when my stomach will stop hurting and he says a week. UGH hope I can last that long!
I drive home head still spinning and force myself to eat chicken and vegetables. I literally mean force. My body was trying to not keep it down, but I told it differently. Finally time to shower (had to eat first my head hurt so bad) and then time to study. As I go to sleep I've got a raging headache and my stomach still hurts. This sucks!
I vow to do better tomorrow!

Canyon Crossfit Nutrition Day 1- I failed already! (Started Tuesday 1/17/12)
So after going to Andrew's seminar and finding out that I basically can't eat ANYTHING (ok maybe that's a little dramatic) I'm stressing out trying to figure out how my house which is full of carbs is going to miraculously turn into a house of green! On the Whole 30 plan you can't eat dairy, sugar, carbs, or drink alcohol. My favorite foods include cheese and bread- see the problem here.
I eat 3 eggs for breakfast with some sauteed onions. I cooked them in bacon fat that we had leftover from a scrumptious meal of pancakes/bacon/and eggs on Monday. I cut up apples to snack on at work along with some blanched almonds. Luckily we had tri tip and broccoli with potatoes the night before so I pack up just the meat and vegetables for lunch. One thing that has always been included in my everyday process is a Diet Dr. Pepper. Not anymore. I have to give up cold turkey! I get through most of the day OK and then a girlfriend and I go out to dinner before going to see Cats the Musical at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts (weird musical). We go to Pat and Oscars and I think I'm so smart cause I'm going to order chicken, green beans, and let my friend have my bread. I even pass on the free sample they hand out to you! The green beans come out smothered in butter. Dammit. I order BBQ sauce on my chicken- duh! there's sugar in that! So I peel back the skin and dig out all the white meat underneath. Then the bread sticks start calling my name...I figured I already cheated so I give into the temptation and eat the bread sticks! Not one! TWO! Ugh. Now I'm feeling guilty, but man did it taste great!
I vow to do better the next day!
